Best 5 Teamer Known to Man - College Week 6 (10/6/07)

Welcome to the Good Life…

I almost ran the table last week (4-1) but West Virginia couldn’t pull it out against South Florida. I always play College Football ‘08 with WV, so I feel like I have a little love for the team, but with no Pat White the entire dynamic of that team changes. The option wasn’t effective and they turned into a passing team. Jarrett Brown is a beast on the video game but he left a lot to be desired last Friday (throwing 2 picks). Also, what is the deal with Steve Slaton? His Heisman hopes are all but gone now but I think that Pat White still has a chance if they can run the table and get into a BCS bowl.

That leads to a good question…

Who is leading in the Heisman Race?

It is so early right now but my candidate “flying under the radar” is Matt Ryan from Boston College. What showed me a lot was how he put up over 400 yards on Georgia Tech, on the road. That is a major statement if you think about how this is the same defense that let Clemson only score 3 points last week (fyi, I called that game last week). If he can get BC to 10 wins, which I think he can, and into the ACC championship it might get him the late season exposure to make him one of the finalists.

CBS sportsline has a poll up on who they think will win the trophy and they have Tim Tebow winning right now. Tebow? We will have to wait and see what happens against LSU this week and the next 2 weeks after (Georgia and Kentucky)…and all those games are on the road.

Heisman Frontrunners?

    Tim Tebow - Florida
    Andre’ Woodson - Kentucky
    John David Booty - USC
    Matt Ryan - BC
    Darren McFadden - Arkansas
    DeSean Jackson - Cal

Best 5 Teamer

I’m 11-9 for the season against the spread. Picking college games without the spread is like bowling with the kiddie bumpers…if you don’t do it you need to step up to the big boy leagues.

1. Florida @ LSU (-7)
I think that Auburn created the game plan for Florida. They controlled the line of scrimmage, stopped Tebow on the QB dives, and didn’t miss tackles. That really isn’t a “gameplan” but that is what you have to do to stop their ugly unconventional offense. LSU is stout on defense and they are ridiculous up the middle (Glen Dorsey is a beast!). Florida is in for a long day….LSU -7

2. Wisconsin @ Illinois (-2 1/2)
This is just another reason why the polls mean nothing. The #5 team in the country is an underdog on the road to an unranked team. But, I’m not big on Wisconsin at all. They should have lost to UNLV. They should have lost to Michigan St. They almost lost to the Citadel. But, they didn’t…they are on a 17 game win streak, even though it has been ugly, but winning is all that matters….Wisconsin +2 1/2

3. Red River Shoot Out - Oklahoma (-11 1/2) @ Texas
The Texas loss was not a surprise at all. I was going to pick Kansas St. last week but I changed my mind at the last minute. The Oklahoma loss was a big surprise. I knew Colorado was solid and the defense looked good against FSU…but I thought OU had too much for them. I’m thinking that they were both looking ahead to this big match. Oklahoma has so much talent that I think they come back with a serious chip this week…OU - 11 1/2

4. Stanford @ USC (-40 1/2)
OK. USC just lost the top spot to LSU after beating a very inspired and up’n coming Washington on the road. They beat Stanford on the road 42-0 last year. Pete Carroll played it cool when he said that the polls don’t matter but you know he is mad behind closed doors. USC is going to be out to prove a point…USC - 40 1/2

5. Virginia Tech @ Clemson (-5 1/2)
James Davis and C.J. Spiller need to be big against the Hokies because they didn’t do what they needed to do last week against Georgia Tech. They combined for only 69 yards and that can’t happen again. But, they will bounce back playing an overrated VT…Clemson - 5 1/2
